The Paris 2024 Olympic Opening Ceremony on Friday drew 28.6 million viewers for NBCUniversal platforms, making it the most-watched summer Olympic opener since London in 2012.
“Last night’s opening ceremony was one of the most ambitious and complex in Olympic history,” NBC Sports President Rick Cordella was quoted as saying by Variety on Saturday (7/27) local time.
According to Rick, the opening ceremony was a spectacle for those in Paris and drew a large audience across NBCU platforms and set a record for Peacock.
The four-hour theatrical ceremony, broadcast live on Friday (26/7) afternoon US time, attracted 10 million more viewers than NBCUniversal’s coverage of the Tokyo opening ceremony in 2021 and more than 2 million viewers than Rio in 2016. The
traditional procession of national teams from each competing country this time was carried out by boat down the Seine River, where event organizers presented visuals to open the event aimed at showcasing modern France.
